Fishermen Return to Marina with 800-Pound Shark

It takes four men to weigh the shark, the biggest seen in years.

Fishermen caught an estimated 800-pound shark about 15 miles off the coast on Monday and brought it into Marina del Rey.

The fishermen went out with chum buckets to attract a shark and returned with the fish to Del Rey Landing, a fuel dock and service store on Bora Bora Way, where about four men helped weigh it, according to witnesses.

"It's been at least a couple of years since I've seen anything that big," said Tony Velardez, assistant manager at Del Rey Landing. "Our scales only go up to 750 pounds."

The shark was most likely a shortfin mako, according Jose Bacallao, operations manager at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, who viewed pictures of the shark.

Correction: The article previously stated that the shark was a longfin mako. It was actually a shortfin mako.
