Hearing Today on Disputed Westside Subway Stop

Metro's proposal to tunnel under Beverly Hills High School to bring the subway to Century City is opposed by Beverly Hills school and city officials.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board of Directors will meet to review objections to a proposed tunnel under Beverly Hills High School that would allow the so-called Subway to the Sea to reach Century City. The high school and Beverly Hills city officials requested today's public hearing because they believe placing the tunnel under the campus would be dangerous. Metro has recommended a Century City station at Constellation Boulevard and Avenue of the Stars over an alternative stop at Santa Monica Boulevard and Century Park East, requiring the subway to go under the high school. The Century City Chamber of Commerce and other neighborhood groups have supported the Constellation station. On April 26, the Metro board approved three …

Southern California Gas Co. Warns Customers of Scam

The scammers claim that President Barack Obama is offering a program of bill credits or direct payment of bills.

Southern California Gas Co. warned its customers Monday about a scam in which the culprits tell victims they can get credits on their utility bills if they provide information such as a Social Security number. According to the gas company, scammers have visited customers in person, used social media sites and even sent text messages to victims claiming that President Barack Obama is offering a program of bill credits or direct payment of bills. Officials of Southern California Gas Co. said workers for the utility always carry proper identification when visiting customers, and they do not randomly call or text customers asking for Social Security numbers or other personal information.  Customers should verify a person's employment before …

New Condo Building Permits Approved

Three new apartment complexes to be built.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday voted unanimously to approve building permits for several redevelopment projects in Marina del Rey. Legacy Partners Neptune Marina, the developer, will demolish an apartment building on Via Marina and Marquesas Way and build three new condominium buildings. Additionally, Neptune will develop a 114-unit residential facility for seniors in an adjacent parking lot, and a 1.46 acre wetland park with a pedestrian pathway. " The new housing project is expected to generate more traffic – about 85 more cars in the area around rush hour, and the developer will pay the county about $483,000 to offset congestion." GREAT! Thr County gets $484.000 and it's citizens get more gridlock. Sounds like the usual trade off in our County.     more ›

Viewing the Solar Eclipse in L.A.

Before sunset Sunday, the Earth's moon will pass in front of the sun, casting a giant shadow across the land.

A solar eclipse is expected to be visible across much of the western U.S. on Sunday, and the Griffith Observatory is planning a public viewing.  In the hours before sunset on Sunday, the Earth's moon will pass in front of the sun – the eclipse will be between 5:24 p.m. and 7:42 p.m. The last solar eclipse visible in the U.S. was in 1994. In Los Angeles, Sunday's eclipse is the most extensive since 1992, according to the observatory. The Griffith Observatory's telescope will be outfitted with special filters, and viewing-glasses will be available for purchase. NASA warns that people should never observe a solar eclipse with the naked eye, only through filtered telescopes and special glasses. To learn more about the eclipse, visit NASA's …

Gov. Brown Says Californians Should Expect Deep Cuts

Impact of budget shortfall uncertain at this point.

Gov. Jerry Brown proposed steep cuts across a variety of programs today to close a nearly $16 billion state budget deficit, but Los Angeles Unified School District and university officials said the impact on their budgets will remain unknown until November, when voters weigh in on proposed tax hikes. "We're going to have to cut deeper," the Democratic governor said in Sacramento while releasing his budget revision. "But cutting alone really doesn't do it," Brown said. "That's why I'm linking these serious budget reductions -- real increased austerity -- with a plea to the voters: Please increase taxes temporarily on the most affluent and everyone else with a quarter of a cent sales tax." Brown said the state's budget deficit ballooned to $…

State May Eliminate Department of Boating and Waterways

State parks division would absorb boating agency.

Gov. Jerry Brown has proposed eliminating the Department of Boating and Waterways, which provides grants for boating law enforcement, marina construction and abandoned vessel removal. In an effort to cut costs, Gov. Brown wants to reduce the number of state agencies from 12 to 10, including integrating DBW as a division of the Department of Parks and Recreation, rather than a standalone agency. The proposal is currently under review by the Little Hoover Commission, an independent state oversight organization that seeks ways to promote government efficiency. “There will be a loss of transparency, a loss of accountability, leadership and boating programs in the future,” said Anne Sacks, former president of the Recreational Boaters of …
