'Dragon' Likely Coming to Del Rey Lagoon

The Neighborhood Council of Westchester/Playa approves funding for a movie night July 16 at the Del Rey Lagoon Park that likely will feature "How to Train Your Dragon."

The Neighborhood Council of Westchester/Playa unanimously approved $500 in funding Tuesday for a movie night at the Del Rey Lagoon Park that probably will feature the animated film How to Train Your Dragon.

The film will be screened for free July 16 after dusk at the lagoon in Playa del Rey in an effort to bring the communities of Playa del Rey and Westchester together, said board member Craig Eggers. The screening follows a movie night last year at Westchester Park that drew hundreds to see The Parent Trap.

The movie screen's backside will face the lagoon and the natural bowl near the baseball diamond will serve as a seating area, Eggers said. The screening will take place during the so-called "Carmageddon" weekend when a 10-mile stretch of the 405 freeway will be closed due to a $1 billion construction project.

The screening will cost an estimated $1,500 and the lion's share will be picked up by local businesses, but the neighborhood council will be the title sponsor, Eggers said.
