Friends of Ballona Wetlands to Hold Celebration

Councilman Tom LaBonge will receive top honor at the annual event.

Friends of Ballona Wetlands are preparing for the organization's annual "Ballona Watershed Warriors Celebration."

This year marks the fourth sponsored by the organization, according to Lisa Fimiani, president of the Friends of Ballona Wetlands.

Councilman Tom LaBonge will receive the top honor this year. Council District Four, which LaBonge represents, "sits at the headwaters of the Ballona Watershed," Fimiani said.

"We live and love the outdoors in L.A., and Tom LaBonge has always been a leader of not only getting out and enjoying the great natural environments here, but to care for them as our own children," said Friends of Ballona Wetlands Board President David Kay. "Whether he’s hiking with constituents in the early morning on a Griffith Park trail, helping community groups spruce up a local City park, or advocating for public green space before the Council, Tom has always reminded us that it matters how we treat the ground beneath our feet."

In addition to LaBonge, Ronald Smith, vice chairman of the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission and the director of the West Basin Municipal Water District will also be recognized during Thursday's celebration.
