LAX Officer Does Double Duty as Rescue Worker with Her Dog Rocky

A Los Angeles Airport Police officer who spends her off time assisting in search-and-rescue operations across the state with her service dog said today she's lucky to have two fulfilling gigs.

While on the clock at Los Angeles International Airport, Officer Anan Chiang conducts background checks for potential candidates who apply to join the Airport Police force.

On her own time, she and her dog, a Weimaraner named Rocky, have completed three years of training and just passed the final exam through the California Rescue Dog Association.

"I really focused on search and rescue because I felt that ...to live a meaningful life is not just about being happy, but it's about being honorable, it's being useful and compassionate," Chiang said.

During the training, Chiang said she learned how to understand Rocky on a different level.

"I as a handler must be able to read what he is telling me. My job is to place his nose, which is absolutely incredible, in the best scent position, so I can find the person that I am looking for," Chiang said.

Chiang and Rocky completed their first volunteer assignment in Santa Barbara in late May.

"Being able to go out and provide the service with Rocky ... it has really made my life so much more meaningful," she said.

Los Angeles Airport Police Chief Patrick Gannon praised Chiang's commitment to service.

"This type of commitment to help others in need is a personal achievement for Officer Chiang, and this is how each and every one of us is able to make a difference in people's lives beyond the call of duty we face each day," Gannon said.

The Los Angeles Airport Police Division employs more than 1,100 police officers, security officers and civilian staff that serve Los Angeles International, LA/Ontario International and Van Nuys airports.
