Metro to Add New Wheelchair Access to Buses

More than 500 new buses will include technology to quickly load wheelchair passengers.

By City News Service

More than 500 new Metro buses will be equipped with technology designed to safely and quickly load wheelchair passengers, it was announced today.

The wheelchair stations, called Q'PODs, will be installed in 550 40- foot, heavy-duty compressed natural gas buses ordered by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

"We have set the high standards for safety, performance, reliability and convenience when it comes to serving the residents of our community," said Metro General Manager Richard Hunt. "By installing two Q'PODs on each of these new buses, we are offering our mobility riders a safe, secure and convenient way to ride that keeps everyone moving at full speed."

Operators who have tested the system find it easier and faster to use, while customers are expected to find it less intrusive, Hunt said.
