Shooting Won't Keep Locals From Flying

County residents report fear won't keep them from airports.

Patch readers in the greater Los Angeles area say they won't stop flying because of Friday's shooting at Los Angeles International Airport.

We asked our Facebook followers whether today's shooting would make them less likely to travel or if they were comforted by law enforcement's quick reactions, and every respondent said he or she would continue flying.

Meghan Barr, responding on the Santa Monica Patch Facebook page said she recently flew at the time of the LAX dry ice bombs and these sorts of incidents make her nervous to travel, "But then again," she wrote, "you can't not live your life."

Barr said being cautious and knowing that at least the law enforcement act quickly is somewhat comforting.

Paula Sherrin, writing on the Venice-Mar Vista Patch Facebook page, said she loves to travel and will continue to do so.

"Let's do a better job of screening the screeners though," she wrote, apparently responding to a rumor the shooter was a TSA agent. (The rumor has not been confirmed at the time of this post.)

Lisa Bartlow in Agoura Hills agreed. "No, I would never allow someone or something to make me feel so afraid that I stopped doing what I enjoy. I will be cautious, of course, but I refuse to be paralyzed by fear," she wrote.

"If a shooting in an airport was likely to stop me traveling, then one in the street would maybe stop me from walking," wrote Kris Noble on Hollywood Patch's Facebook page. "Can't live in fear of that, just gotta get on with things and hope it never happens to us," she said.

Mikael Andersson will also continue to fly, but "I might use Burbank instead of LAX when possible," he wrote on the Malibu Patch facebook page.

Linda Malek, who was writing on the Manhattan Beach Patch Facebook page from LAX, where she was in lockdown for the time being, didn't say whether she'd continue to travel via air travel, but did say this, "I know it is unrealistic, but my only comment is this: Make guns illegal."

"If guns are illegal, only the bad guys will have guns," Bob Shaw answered her.
