Venice Beached Whale Confirmed as Rare Species
The Perrin's beaked whale was first believed to be a Stejneger's beaked whale. Testing shows it is a very rare species.
A whale found stranding itself along Venice beach in October has been confirmed to be a Perrin's beaked whale, according to Alisa Schulman-Janiger of the
American Cetacean Society - Los Angeles Chapter.
Genetics testing confirmed the species, said Schulman-Janiger, who noted the whale is the sixth record of the rare whale stranding itself. All strandings have been in California. The Venice whale was the first stranding of the species in Los Angeles County, she said.
The Venice whale, which was a 13.9-foot female Mesoplodon perrini, was found on Oct. 15. "She is now part of the collection of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County," wrote Schulman-Janiger on the American Cetacean Society - Los Angeles Chapter's Facebook page.
