Viewfinder: Where the Wilds Things Are

This week's installment of the Viewfinder themed photo gallery focuses on local wildlife.

Wildlife is the theme of this week's installment of the Viewfinder photo gallery. We may not have lions, and tigers and bears, but we do have seals, Great Blue Herons, Ospreys and Red Tail Hawks.

Del Rey Palm Trees around Beethoven and Bonepart are prime nesting areas for the Red Tail Hawks. There are now two generations (( at least)) of the giant birds living in our area. "Red-tailed Hawks are large hawks with typical Buteo proportions: very broad, rounded wings and a short, wide tail. The tail is usually pale below and cinnamon-red above, though in young birds it’s brown and banded. “Dark-phase” birds are all chocolate-brown with a warm red tail. “Rufous-phase” birds are reddish-brown on the chest with a dark belly."
