What Would You Like to See in the Vacant Wild Oats?

In a more perfect Mar Vista, what would be the best use for the empty grocery store at the corner of Centinela and Palms?

Do you remember when there was a Wild Oats at the corner of Centinela and Palms? The little grocery was a boon to the neighborhood. It was a conveient place to pick up healthy food, if a bit more expensive and smaller than groceries farther away.

The store has been vacant for more than five years. During that time it has attracted graffiti and advertising posters. The lot has been rented out for Christmas trees, but the store has not been occupied.

According to the Mar Vista Community Council, there are no plans for a new tenant in the empty store.

It has difficult parking lot access because cars and delivery trucks must enter and exit from Palms going west on a steep hill and there is a posted no left turn sign for cars going east on Palms.

Still, we can dream. What would you like to see in that empty store? Do you think a business could occupy the existing structure and make a go of it? Or do you think any new business there would neeed a different building and access from Centinela to succede?

It's a tear-down. Then ........... - Centinela access and some manner of keeping the Palms access always open - subterranean parking and/or roof parking - grocers we got for that area; perhaps multiple tenants of domestic wares, clothes, lifestyle, etc. - and a Webcam on the intersection and parking so we can decide whether or not it's too painful to go

I've also heard that the asking price is unreasonable and that is why it hasn't been rented or sold. I agree that it probably has to be torn down and rebuilt to address the parking lot access issue. I'd love to see a casual, but not fast food restaurant there, a bakery or an ice cream shop. Any other ideas?

Someone should get Demetrius to put in something like The Wood in that location!

I remember when it was Mrs Gooches but don't remember what it was before that.

I know a local resident that would love to put a restaurant there - and has talked to the agents for the owners. The plans were for a complete physical change allowing access via Centinela and an open air eating area on an added second story. But the price is way too high and it's not negotiable. Doubtful anything will ever be done with the property because of the unrealistic price.
