Heal the Bay Reels in Brian Wilson for 'Ultimate Beach Party'

Heal the Bay has a new reason to "Smile": The nonprofit has announced that Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys will play a full set at its annual Bring Back the Beach dinner.

The May 19 event, which is being called "The Ultimate Beach Party," will take place on the sand at the Jonathan Beach Club in Santa Monica.

Laird Hamilton and his wife, Gabrielle Reece — who are stars of surfing and beach volleyball, respectively — will be among the 1,000 guests attending the 20th-annual gala. It will last from 5 to 11 p.m.

The high-profile event will follow in the wake of a March fundraiser held at Latitude 33 in Marina del Rey for Heal the Bay that featured an auction of surfboards painted by artists. More than 250 guest attended the event and $11,000 in donations were generated through the sale of the surfboards.

The group also had that saw baseball players from the Los Angeles Dodgers lending their support to Heal the Bay.

In addition to food and music, "The Ultimate Beach Party" will feature an auction, cocktail reception and awards. Attendees will bid on a 2011 Ford Escape hybrid vehicle that will be auctioned off.

Award recipients include the California State Coastal Conservancy, a state agency that will be thanked for providing grants to fund watershed management and programs at the , which is operated by Heal the Bay.

Homerun Entertainment — a production company of which Heal the Bay board member Barry Gribbon is a co-founder and principal — will be honored for producing the Bring Back the Beach event for free in each of the last seven years.

Finally, Don Smith will be recognized for heading up sewer-system and treatment-plant improvements that have boosted water quality in Santa Monica Bay. He is the former manager of the Hyperion Treatment Plant in Playa del Rey and program director of the City of Los Angeles Wastewater.

Individual tickets for "The Ultimate Beach Party" are $500 apiece, while tables and sponsorships cost between $5,000 and $50,000. Go here for more information.
