Springsteen Named MusiCares Person of the Year

The award will be presented at a gala in February, two days before the 55th annual Grammy Awards.

Iconic musician Bruce Springsteen, famed for hits including "Born in the U.S.A." to "Thunder Road" to "Dancing in the Dark," will be honored as the 2013 MusiCares Person of the Year, recognizing his successful career and wide-ranging philanthropic efforts, the MusiCares Foundation announced today.

"Bruce is synonymous with artistic independence and a passion for causes that are close to his heart," said Scott Pascucci, chairman of the foundation's board. "His career seamlessly combines inspiration and charity, and it's a reminder that we can all do our part to make the world a better place."

Springsteen, nicknamed "The Boss," will be honored at a Feb. 8 ceremony, two days before the 55th annual Grammy Awards. The event will be the foundation's 23rd annual gala, with proceeds going toward providing support for MusiCares programs and services, such as emergency financial assistance and educational workshops, for members of the music community.

Springsteen's recording career has spanned nearly 40 years, starting with his 1973 Columbia Records release "Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J." The 62-year-old musician has released 17 studio albums, won 20 Grammy awards and won an Oscar for "Streets of Philadelphia," the title theme to the 1993 film "Philadelphia."

The MusiCares Person of the Year tribute ceremony is one of the most prestigious events held during Grammy week, according to foundation officials.

The gala will begin with a reception and silent auction offering luxury items, VIP experiences and celebrity memorabilia. The auction will be followed by a dinner, the award presentation and a star-studded tribute concert.
