Gas Prices Stable After Month of Increases

A refinery fire in Washington is one cause of the sharp rise in February.

Gasoline prices in Los Angeles and Orange counties remained stable today after nearly one month of uninterrupted increases.

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Los Angeles County rose one-tenth of a cent today to $4.378, one day after increasing two-tenths of a cent, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.

A 27-day streak of increases that ended Monday with a decrease of two- tenths of a cent is responsible for the prices being 2.1 cents more than one week ago, 57 cents higher than a month ago and 46.8 cents greater than a year ago.

The market appears to have absorbed a one-day, 35-cent per gallon increase in the wholesale cost of gasoline triggered by last month's major fire at the Cherry Point refinery near Blaine, Wash., according to Marie Montgomery of the Automobile Club of Southern California.

The fire forced the refinery's closure, reducing supply.
