Beautiful Day, Lakers Win, Follow Us Socially

Forecasters say we'll have sunny skies and warm temperatures during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend.

Today is Jan. 15. We are under a waxing gibbous moon. Sunset will occur at 5:09 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for today calls for sunny skies and a high of 78 degrees with clear skies tonight and an overnight low of about 57 degrees. Forecasters said it will be sunny Sunday with a high near 76 degrees and sunny on Martin Luther King Jr. Day too, with a high near 75 degrees.

2. Playa del Rey resident Phil Jackson and the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers beat the New Jersey Nets on Friday night at the Staples Center. The Lakers have won seven games in a row.

3. A memorial celebration will be held Sunday for Brigitte Burdine, the 48-year-old woman who was struck and killed early Dec. 29 by a hit-and-run driver in Playa del Rey. The memorial starts at 5 p.m. at the House of Blues on Sunset Boulevard. More details here.
