Boat Captain Bound for Marina del Rey Washed Overboard

A bystander rescues a sailboat captain whose boat hit the rocks in Redondo Beach while en route to Marina del Rey.

A bystander jumped into chilly waters Thursday evening and rescued a boat captain bound for Marina del Rey who had been washed overboard by a large wave, officials said.

Boat captain David Glenn, 47, was sailing from Long Beach to Marina del Rey when he hit rough weather in Redondo Beach and tried to find shelter at King Harbor, the Redondo Beach Fire Department said in a statement. Glenn, however, couldn't get through the entrance and hit the rocks near Kincaid's on the Redondo Beach Pier, the statement said.

Chris Keenan, a bystander, apparently saw Glenn in the water and jumped in the chilly water to help him out, authorities said.

The Redondo Beach Fire Department and the Los Angeles County Harbor Patrol responded to a 911 call shortly before 7 p.m. and arrived at the scene less than five minutes later.  Paramedics treated Glenn for minor cuts and scrapes from the rocks and helped Glenn and Keenan warm up.

Glenn's 27-foot sailboat broke up on the rocks and sunk.
