Celebrate Arbor Day

How will you enjoy nature today?

Friday is Arbor Day, the national day to celebrate the Earth and all it has to offer us. So in honor of that, we present five facts to know about Arbor Day.

Information from ArborDay.org.

  • April Celebration—Nationally, it is common to celebrate the holiday on the last Friday of April. This has been proclaimed by many presidents, although some states celebrate on other days to coincide with planting seasons in January and February in the south, and May in the north.
  • Nebraska—The holiday began its observation in Nebraska after pioneer J. Sterling Morton proposed a tree planting holiday to the state's Board of Agriculture in 1872. Morton was a huge advocate of planting trees and other greenery.
  • Plant a Tree—This is the most important thing you can do in honor of Arbor Day. Plant a tree somewhere, and prepare to watch it grow in the coming years.
  • Awards Program—Since 1972, awards have been given to outstanding environmental leaders and organizations that put a focus on sustainable living.
  • Celebrate—There are so many ways to celebrate Arbor Day besides planting a tree, including going on a hike, searching for trees, dedicating a forest, having an Arbor Day contest and much more.
