Coast Guard Day, Sanitation Rates and Boating Supplies

It's the 221st year of the Coast Guard. Also, the Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation is taking steps to raise rates, and boating columnist Paul M.J. Suchecki visits the West Marine store for supplies.

Today is Aug. 4. It is the 216th day of the year. We are under a waxing crescent moon. Sunset will occur about 7:53 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service is forecasting for this afternoon partly sunny skies near 74 degrees, with patchy fog after 11 p.m. and an overnight low around 64 degrees. Cloud cover will increase in the evening. Forecasters expect patchy fog throughout the week, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the high 60s.

2. Today is National Coast Guard Day. This is the 221st anniversary of the U.S. armed forces’ maritime branch.
