A woman in a silver BMW slammed into the median that separates Fiji Way about 50 yards east of Lincoln Boulevard on Sunday at approximately 8 p.m., according to a resident who saw the damage after the accident occurred.
The landscaped island with steel-reinforced cement pillars that separates Fiji Way is intended to prohibit drivers from using the road as a shortcut to the Marina Freeway.
"The pillar was underneath the car," said Joanie Nester, a Villa Marina resident. She said that the woman, who appeared to be in her mid 20's, was stable after the accident and that the airbag had deployed.
A phone call to the Los Angeles Street Maintenance Division to inquire about the estimated repair time for the damage was not immediately returned.
Correction: The article previously quoted Joanie Nester as saying that the pillar was on top of the car, but the pillar was actually underneath.
