Driver Hits Hydrant in Del Rey

Firefighters had to shut off water as it shot into the air.

A driver and his passenger fell asleep early Monday morning and awoke to find their car had struck a fire hydrant and power pole in the Del Rey area and come to rest atop some parked cars, police said.

The accident in the 11800 block of West Jefferson Boulevard was reported at 1:37 a.m., said Sgt. Cynthia Barlow of the Los Angeles Police Department's West Traffic Division. "There was no crime, no DUI, a little pain from a seatbelt injury," Barlow said.

The sheared hydrant apparently acted like a lever to lift the silver Mercedes on top of some parked cars, she said. The power pole broke away from the ground and was suspended in mid-air by wires. Water shot into the air until firefighters arrived to shut it off.
