Eid-eh Shoma Mobarak to You and Yours!

Patch would like to wish the community a Happy Nowruz.

The celebration of Nowruz, the traditional Iranian New Year, is in full swing.

Nowruz is a secular holiday that begins on the first day of spring when the vernal equinox occurs—March 20 in Marina del Rey, but March 21 in Tehran. On the first day of Nowruz, which is considered New Year’s Day, people start 12 days of celebration by visiting family and friends at their homes. Gifts are often exchanged, with plenty of pastries, cookies, nuts and fresh and dried fruits for visitors to snack on. On the 13th day, families may leave their homes to enjoy an outdoor picnic.

Celebrated in greater Iran, Caucasus, Central Asia and by Iranians worldwide, Nowruz is a public holiday in Iran, Iraqi Kurdistan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Albania, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Georgia.

Some believe that one’s behavior during the Nowruz celebrations will affect the rest of the year, so be kind to your family, friends and neighbors. The celebration is also marked by extensive spring cleaning in association with the "rebirth of nature."
