Hahn Wins, Sunny Afternoons and Blog for Patch

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn is the first member of her politically active family to win federal office and will serve as a representative of the 36th Congressional District.

Today is July 13. It is the 194th day of the year. We are under a waxing gibbous moon. Sunset will occur about 8:08 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn is going to Washington. Hahn, a Democrat, beat Republican tea party candidate Craig Huey in a special general election Tuesday to fill a vacant seat in Congress. Details right here.

2. The National Weather Service forecast for this afternoon calls for sunny skies with a high near 71 degrees with a chance of drizzle after 11 p.m. and an overnight low around 62 degrees. Forecasters say there's a chance of drizzle Thursday morning but the skies should gradually clear to a sunny afternoon with a high near 70.

3. Are you ready for the shutdown this weekend of the 405 Freeway between Interstate 10 and U.S. 101? If you need to get around, there will be free rides on the Metro Orange, Red and Purple lines and 26 bus lines will run for free on major Westside and San Fernando Valley streets. Details right here.

4. Patch is looking for bloggers. We recently rolled out a new blogging platform and are looking for local bloggers to write about whatever they want, whenever they want. If you're interested or want to learn more, send me an email: Paul.Chavez@patch.com
