Hot Weather, County Redistricting and Coastal Cleanup Day

The National Weather Service expects highs in the upper 80s today and tomorrow, with cooler temperatures in the mid-70s Friday.

Today is Sept. 7. It is the 250th day of the year. We are under a waxing gibbous moon. Sunset will occur about 7:13 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for this afternoon calls for sunny skies with a high near 90 degrees with clear skies tonight and an overnight low around 66 degrees. Forecasters expect sunny skies Thursday afternoon with a high near 89 and cooler temperatures in the mid-70s Friday. The beaches will be the coolest place to be in the region with inland temperatures in the 100s.

2. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors held a marathon redistricting hearing yesterday and the main sticking point continues to be the creation of a second Latino-majority district. Details right here.

3. The Neighborhood Council of Westchester/Playa met last night and approved several letters, including a letter opposing the Green Street Wellness Center medical marijuana facility in Westchester and another encouraging the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to keep Westchester, Playa del Rey and Playa Vista together in redistricting maps.

4. The Santa Monica-based environmental group Heal the Bay is seeking volunteers for Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 17. The Ballona Creek is among the roughly 60 designated cleaning sites and the Santa Monica REI store is organizing a kayak cleanup there. Details right here.

5. If you're student is going back to school this week, we want your Back-to-School photos for a new photo gallery that we hope will become a tradition. Share the momentous occasion with your family, friend and neighbors here on Patch by sending an email to paul.chavez@patch.com.
