L.A. County Beach Quality, Surf and Snow Report

A look at the water quality and surf at local beaches and the snow in local mountains around Los Angeles.

Snow Report:

Big Bear Mountain has not received any new snow this week although snow is forecasted for the end of Sunday through Tuesday.  The coverage is "excellent" on the open runs and the snow depth is 18-34 inches, according to the resort snow report. High temperatures are expected to be in the upper 40s on Saturday and upper 30s on Sunday.

Mammoth Mountain also did not receive any new snow this week but snow is in the forecast for Sunday through Tuesday.  The snow depth on the slopes ranges from 74 inches at the base to 175 inches at the summit. All 150 runs are open. The high is expected to be in the high 30s. Both days will see sunny skies.

Saturday will be mostly cloudy with a highs in the mid 60s and lows in the mid 50s. Sunday will see a 40 percent chance of scattered showers with a high in the low 60s and lows in the lower 50s. Winds are expected to be in the 5-10 mph range on both Saturday and Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

 

Los Angeles County surf report:

A west swell is hitting the area and sets are expected to be in the 1-2 foot range on Saturday and 3-4 foot range on Sunday.

The attached map is a water quality report for beaches in dry weather from March 4 to March 27 compiled from data courtesy of Heal the Bay, a nonprofit environmental group. Beach grades are based on an A+ to F scale. Grades indicate the likelihood of swimmers becoming ill. Water samples are analyzed for bacteria – enterococcus, total and fecal coliforms. The report does not measure the amount of trash or toxins found at local beaches.

Light Blue Marker = A

Green Marker = B

Yellow Marker = C

Pink = D

Red Marker = F

Purple Marker = No sample taken
