LAPD Warns of Bicycle Thefts
Bicycle thefts have been a problem in recent weeks in the area, according to the Los Angeles Police Department's Pacific Division.
"We have a lot taken from Venice Beach," said LAPD Detective Robyn Salazar. "People leave them unattended when they swim."
Another problem is people do not lock their bicycles or do not use strong enough locks, according to Salazar. Police recommend using solid, medal locks for protection. Salazar also encourages bike owners to not leave valuables on unattended bikes.
"Baskets and backpacks are a target," Salazar said. "It’s just common sense. You can’t leave them at any time."
Nearly 30 bicycles were stolen between April 14 and May 11 in the coverage area of the LAPD’s Pacific division, according to Salazar. That area includes Venice, Mar Vista, Marina del Rey, Playa del Rey, Del Rey and Playa Vista.
Another problem, particularly at some residential complexes in Marina del Rey, is bicycles being stolen from bike racks in underground parking garages, according to Salazar. Some burglars have also been known to climb onto balconies to steal bikes or grab them from open garages, Salazar said.
LAPD officers warm that the most important thing is to keep the LAPD campaign in mind which is: “Lock It, Hide It, Keep It.”
