Lieu Wins, More Rain and Learn the Lindy Hop

The National Weather Service predicts more rain, high surf at west facing beaches and warns of strong rip currents.

Today is Feb. 16. It is the 47th day of the year. We are under a waxing gibbous moon. Sunset will occur about 5:40 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. Democratic candidate Ted Lieu handily won election to the state Senate's 28th District yesterday by capturing 57.14 percent of the vote. His closest challenger in the field of eight, Republican Bob Valentine, gained only 25.11 percent of the vote. There's a full story here.

2. The National Weather Service forecast for today calls for rain this afternoon with a high temperature of 59 degrees and mostly cloudy tonight with a low around 48 degrees. There's a 40 percent chance of rain, mainly after 10 p.m. Forecasters said there will be higher than normal surf this evening through Thursday evening with waves of four to six feet with the highest waves at west-facing beaches. There's also a high risk of strong rip currents.

There's a 40 percent chance of rain Thursday primarily before 10 a.m.

3. Playa del Rey apparently is a little hotbed for swing dancing. You can learn where to get into the groove with your East Coast swing dance or perfect that Lindy Hop by reading this story right here.

4. Playa del Rey resident Phil Jackson and the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers play the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight in the final game of their seven-game road trip. The Lakers are 4-2 on the road trip and it's unlikely they'll lose to the Cavs, who they beat by 55 points last month. Something seems different about the Cavs this season, can't quite put my finger on it.
