Mostly Sunny, Opening Days and Election Tomorrow

Opening Days are going to be celebrated this weekend in Marina del Rey and there's a citywide election tomorrow.

Today is March 8. It is the 67th day of the year. We are under a waxing crescent moon. Sunset will occur about 5:57 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for today calls for mostly sunny skies with a high near 61 degrees and winds between 20 and 30 mph, with some gusts as high as 40 mph. It should be mostly clear tonight with an overnight low around 45 degrees and breezy with gusts as high as 35 mph.

A hazardous weather outlook also warns that beachgoers will face dangerous rip currents today and that boats will face gale force winds across both inner and outer waters.

2. Playa del Rey resident Phil Jackson and the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers thrashed the San Antonio Spurs yesterday, 99-83, holding a 32-point lead at one point in the game. The Lakers beat the team with the best record in the NBA and extended their winning streak to seven games since the All-Star break.

3. Opening Days are this weekend. No, this has nothing to do with baseball. It's opening days for the sailing season and boating columnist Paul M.J. Suchecki has the rundown on the formal events that will be held in Marina del Rey. You can learn  more right here.

4. It's Election Day tomorrow for you Playa del Rey and Del Rey residents. There are charter amendments and ballot measures on the ballot and some precincts will be voting for city council and school board seats. Check here later today for a campaign wrapup piece, or visit the Government part of our News section if you want to get started. Come back tomorrow for full Election Day coverage, including a live chat.
