Mostly Sunny, Remembering Steve Jobs and Bank Robbery Foiled

The National Weather Service is predicting a mostly sunny afternoon today with sunny skies and warmer temperatures through the weekend.

Today is Oct. 6. It is the 279th day of the year. We are under a waxing gibbous moon. Sunset will occur about 6:33 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for this afternoon calls for a 20 percent chance of showers with mostly sunny skies and a high near 68 degrees. It should be partly cloudy and breezy tonight with an overnight low around 55 degrees. Forecasters say it will be sunny Friday with a high near 70 and sunny and warm through the weekend and the Columbus Day holiday Monday.

2. An unarmed 25-year-old transient from St. Louis attempted to rob the Bank of America branch in Marina del Rey, but a silent alarm was triggered and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputies quickly arrested him, said Detective Mark Martinovich. More details right here.

3. My first computer ever was a Mac SE and I use a Patch-issued iPhone 4 and a MacBook Pro for work, so the death yesterday of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs hit somewhat close to home. Our friends at Palo Alto Patch have a tribute page where locals and far away fans alike are sharing their thoughts on Jobs' life and legacy. You can visit that page . Also, Palo Alto Patch has an article by one of Jobs' neighbors that shows another side of the computer icon, read that one .

4. Yom Kippur starts Friday. To learn more about the Jewish Day of Atonement and Judaism's holiest day of the year, go right here.

5. Today's the deadline for surf schools, beach camps and other operators of recreational activities on Los Angeles County beaches to submit their applications for summer 2012 beach permits. Details right here.
