Update: September 24, 2:45 p.m.
Authorities did not send any cleanup crews to the site of a small fuel slick that was reported earlier Monday morning in the main channel adjacent to Fisherman's Village.
Police noticed the spill, believed to be gasoline, during a regular morning patrol. It spread to an area of about 100 to 300 yards, according to Sgt. Jeff Olander of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
A sheriff’s department helicopter flew over the affected area, but could not determine the source of the spill. It contacted the U.S. Coast Guard, which is now overseeing the investigation.
Olander said the fuel likely evaporated as of Monday afternoon.
Coast Guard officers took water samples and believe that a vessel is responsible for the spill, not a fuel dock. But, it does not yet know exactly where the fuel emanated from.
