Partly Sunny, Lakers Done and Halibut Derby Returns

After a one year absence, the Halibut Derby is back.

Today is May 9. It is the 129th day of the year. We are under a waxing crescent moon. Sunset will occur about 7:45 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for this afternoon calls for partly sunny skies with a high near 66 degrees with a 20 percent chance of rain after 11 p.m. and an overnight low around 54 degrees. It should be mostly sunny Tuesday with a high near 66.

2. Playa del Rey resident Phil Jackson and the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers were swept out of the playoffs Sunday by the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference semifinals. Jackson, 65, has repeatedly said this would be his last season coaching as the Lakers entertained hopes of a threepeat. The Los Angeles Times reports that the 1920s style reporter Scoops Callahan was the last journalist to ask Jackson a question at his postgame news conference.

3. Boating columnist Paul M.J. Suchecki writes about how the Halibut Derby is back after a one year absence. To learn more about the Halibut Derby, go right here.
