Rain Looming, Adam Donations and Follow Us

The family of Jean and Scott Adam, the Del Rey Yacht Club members who were killed by Somali pirates, have asked that donations in their memory be made to St. Monica's Church's music program.

Today is Feb. 24. It is the 55th day of the year. We are under a waning gibbous moon. Sunset will occur about 5:47 p.m. Here are five things to know about:

1. The National Weather Service forecast calls for mostly sunny skies this afternoon with a high of 56 degrees with partly cloudy skies and an overnight low around 44 degrees. Forecasters said a "very cold" low pressure system from Canada will move into the region later today and rain will be likely Friday mainly after 4 p.m.

2. Playa del Rey resident Phil Jackson and the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers beat the Portland Trail Blazers last night in overtime 106-101 at the Rose Garden.

3. Boating columnist Paul M.J. Suchecki has a new article on the all-volunteer and friendly Marina Yacht Club.  You can read about it right here.

4. The family of Jean and Scott Adam, the Del Rey Yacht Club members who were killed by Somali pirates, has requested that donations made in memory of the couple be directed to the St. Monica Catholic Church's music program. Details on that are right here.

5. Did you know you can follow Marina del Rey Patch, which also covers Del Rey and Playa del Rey, on Facebook and Twitter? Also, I've been trying to start a new Moms Council that we hope will range from the working mom to the stay-at-home mom to the stay-at-home dad to the PTA parents to the soccer moms. The Moms Council will use its motherly expertise to facilitate discussions about parenting and help guide parenting coverage for the site. If you're interested, please send me an e-mail at: paul.chavez@patch.com. Be cool, help me and your fellow moms out.
