Rainy Weekend, Beach Cleanup and Super Full Moon

There's going to be a so-called "super full moon" this weekend with our little orbiting buddy looking larger than normal.

Today is March 18. It is the 77th day of the year. We are under a waxing gibbous moon. Sunset will occur about 7:05 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service Forecast for today calls for mostly sunny skies with a high near 66 degrees, but there's a 20 percent chance of rain tonight after 11 p.m. and the overnight low should be around 49 degrees.

Light rain is likely Saturday as a low pressure system moves into the area and a second cold front Sunday will bring heavier rainfall.

2. Playa del Rey resident Phil Jackson and the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers host the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight at Staples Center. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.

3. The vernal equinox takes place Sunday at 4:21 p.m., which means we'll be getting more daylight hours than nighttime hours for several months. The full moon on Saturday also will be extra large because the moon will closest in its cycle to the earth. The so-called "super full moon" will look particularly large right after sunset, especially if there are foreground objects.

4. Heal the Bay is holding a beach cleanup tomorrow in Playa del Rey at Toes Beach from 10 a.m. to noon. You can learn more details right here.

5. Did you know you can follow Marina del Rey Patch, which also covers Del Rey and Playa del Rey, on Facebook and Twitter?
