Yacht with Ties to Del Rey Club Hijacked by Somali Pirates

The Del Rey Yacht Club has sailed with and is the mail drop for Jean and Scott Adam, owners of the seized S/V Quest.

A yacht carrying four Americans, including a couple that has sailed with the Del Rey Yacht Club in Marina del Rey, has been hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia, officials said.

The hijacked 58-foot yacht was identified as the S/V Quest owned by Jean and Scott Adam, who according to their website are on a worldwide mission to distribute Bibles. The yacht was identified by the Somali mission to the United Nations on Friday by Omar Jamal, first secretary at the Somali mission, according to a report by The Associated Press.

The couple's website says that Jean is a former dentist and that the Del Rey Yacht Club in Marina del Rey was the couple's mail drop. The Quest started its around-the-world tour with the Del Rey Yacht Club's international race to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in 2005. It later met up with the Del Rey Yacht Club during a rendezvous in the Polynesian islands.

Jamal told The AP that Somalia's U.N. mission is calling for the immediate release of the hostages.

The Adams are formerly of Newport Beach and they were with another American couple, but their identity was not immediately known. The Quest was among a flotilla of yachts when it was seized about 270 miles off the coast of Oman in the Indian Ocean.
