Some LAX Flights May be Canceled Due to Asiana Crash

Officials urge passengers to check with their airlines before flying out of LAX Monday.

Some Los Angeles International Airport flights to and from San Francisco may be canceled Monday as a result of Saturday's Asiana Airlines jetliner crash in San Francisco, but no cancellations or delays were projected through noon, an LAX spokeswoman said.

"Just like when flights are canceled due to bad whether, we have to catch up with crews or equipment related to San Francisco," said LAX spokeswoman Nancy Suey Castles.

Castles said crew members or aircraft for flights departing LAX might be stuck in San Francisco, and it could take a day or two to assemble the people or equipment needed to resume a canceled flight. That could even affect a flight from LAX to Portland or Seattle, Castles said.

And if one flight can get out but its connecting flight is canceled, the airline could cancel the original flight, Castles said.

"If a lot of people have to connect to a flight, and the connecting flight is not there, you might as well cancel it," Castles said, adding that otherwise, passengers wind up camping out in terminals or airlines have to pay to house passengers in hotels until connecting flights are available.

But after a survey of airlines, LAX officials have determined that no delays or cancellations at LAX are projected through noon today. An update is expected after noon.

Passengers should call their airlines, check flight status online, or sign up for email notifications regarding possible canceled flights, Castles said.
