St. Patrick's Day, Del Rey Council Meets, Follow Us

Kenny Jones, a former standout player at St. Bernard High School in Playa del Rey, is a walk-on player at UCLA and will be read to play in the NCAA tournament.

Today is March 17. Happy St. Patrick's Day! It is the 76th day of the year. We are under a waxing gibbous moon. Sunset will occur about 7:04 p.m. Here five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service Forecast for today calls for patchy fog before 11 a.m. followed by mostly sunny skies with a high near 64 degrees. Forecasters said to expect patchy fog after 11 p.m. and an overnight low around 49 degrees. Beachgoers also should expect higher than normal surf and strong rip currents.

Also, there's 20 percent chance of rain Friday night.

2. The UCLA Bruins men's basketball team competes tonight in the NCAA basketball tournament and former St. Bernard High School standout Kenny Jones will be dressed out and ready to play. Jones made the team and the Los Angeles Times reported that Jones nailed a half-court shot yesterday during practice in Tampa, FLA. Tipoff versus Michigan State is at 6:20 p.m.

3. The Del Rey Neighborhood Council meets tonight and will consider several sponsorship opportunities, including up to $3,000 a Mar Vista Family Center Literacy Event and $5,000 for the annual Relay for Life.

4. It's St. Patrick's Day and Brennan's Pub is having a St. Patrick's Day Spectacular with lots of food and indoor/outdoor music from noon until 2 a.m. and, of course, green beer.
