Sunny Afternoon, Big Sunday and Bloggers Wanted

Big Sunday, the weekend set aside for regional volunteering, is coming up in a few days and a couple of locals need your help.

Today is May 11. It is the 131st day of the year. We are under a first quarter moon. Sunset will occur about 7:46 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for this afternoon calls for sunny skies with a high near 62 degrees with patchy fog after 11 p.m. and an overnight low around 54 degrees. It should be foggy Thursday morning and cloudy through mid-morning before gradually clearing with a high near 63 degrees.

2. Former Raiders defensive end Anthony Wayne Smith, 43, has pleaded not guilty to murder along with two co-defendants for the 2008 slaying of a 31-year-old Lancaster man. Smith, who was the Raiders top pick in the 1990 draft, was living in Marina del Rey at the time of the killing. Learn more right here.

3. This upcoming Sunday is Big Sunday weekend, when volunteers from all over Southern California work together to help hundreds of nonprofits, schools and other agencies. Some 50,000 volunteers helped out last year at more than 500 different projects from San Diego to Solvang. There are a couple of local opportunities to participate in Big Sunday. Playa del Rey Elementary needs volunteers for a campus beautification project and the Mar Vista Family Center is holding a bone marrow drive to find potential donors.

4. Patch is looking for bloggers. We rolled out a new blogging platform last week and are looking for local bloggers to write about whatever they want, whenever they want. If you're interested or want to learn more, send me an email: Paul.Chavez@patch.com
