Sunny Afternoon, Happy Jewish New Year and Blog for Patch

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors also approves a redistricting plan that largely maintains the status quo and may invite a voting rights lawsuit since it doesn't create a second Latino-majority district.

Today is Sept. 28. It is the 271st day of the year. We are under a waxing crescent moon. Sunset will occur about 6:44 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for this afternoon calls for sunny skies with a high near 71 degrees with patchy fog expected after 11 p.m. and an overnight low around 63 degrees. Forecasters expect patchy fog Thursday morning with gradual clearing and an afternoon high near 68 degrees.

2. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to approve a redistricting plan that largely maintains the status quo despite warnings of votings rights act lawsuit if a second Latino-majority district was not created. The plan submitted by 4th District Supervisor Don Knabe, who represents Marina del Rey and Playa del Rey, was supported by Superviosr Mark Ridley-Thomas who said he endorsed it to expedite a legal review. 3. Ten kayakers from the UCLA-Marina Aquatic Center have been preparing all summer for a 26-mile, open sea trek to Catalina Island on Oct. 1. Patch blogger J.W.
