Sunny Afternoon, Playa Council Meets and Blog for Patch

The National Weather Service says it will be hot again today with temperatures in the upper 70s near the coast.

Today is July 5. It is the 186th day of of the year. We are under a waxing crescent moon. Sunset will occur about 8:10 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for this afternoon calls for sunny skies with a high near 76 degrees with partly cloudy skies tonight and an overnight low around 64 degree. Forecasters predict mostly sunny skies Wednesday with a high near 69 degrees.

2. The board of the Neighborhood Council of Westchester/Playa meets tonight at 6:30 at the Westchester Municipal Building Community Room, 7166 Manchester Ave., Westchester, CA 90045. The agenda for tonight's meeting is right here.

3. The Fourth of July was celebrated without fireworks in Marina del Rey, but area beaches were packed as revelers tried to beat the heat. An elderly man suffered smoke inhalation and was rescued after a fire broke out in his kitchen late Sunday in Marina del Rey, according to a City News Service report. Also, actor Andrew Keegan was detained by police while hosting a loud party Saturday in Marina del Rey and details are here and here.
