Sunny Afternoon, Wildflower Hotline and Follow Us

The National Weather Service forecast for today calls for sunny skies and some patch fog tonight.

Today is April 1. It is the 91st day of the year. We are under a waning crescent moon. Sunset will occur about 7:16 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for this afternoon calls for increasing clouds with a high near 75 degrees with patchy fog tonight and an overnight low around 57 degrees. It should be foggy Saturday morning but mostly sunny in the afternoon with a high near 68 degrees.

2. Playa del Rey resident Phil Jackson and the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers beat the Dallas Mavericks 110-92 last night at Staples Center. The Lakers now have a 1 1/2 gme lead over Dallas for second place in the Western Conference.

3. Ruby the African elephant, who lived for 20 years at the Los Angeles Zoo before being sent to a San Andreas sanctuary in 2007 after years of lobbying by animal-rights activists, has died at age 50, zoo officials said.

4. The 24-hour Theodore Payne Wildflower Hotline is up and running at (818) 768-3533 or www.wildflowerhotline.org to find the best places to view wildflowers in Southern and Central California. The hotline is updated every Thursday evening with new information on more than 90 wildflower sites.
