Sunny Afternoon With Rain Tomorrow, Kayaking to Catalina and Vikings Climb

The National Weather Service says it will be sunny this afternoon, but there's a 90 percent chance of rain Wednesday.

Today is Oct. 4. It is the 277th day of the year. We are under a first quarter moon. Sunset will occur about 6:35 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for this afternoon calls for mostly sunny skies with a high near 66 degrees with a 20 percent chance of showers. There's a 20 percent chance of rain after 11 p.m. and an overnight low around 59 degrees is expected. Forecasters predict rain Wednesday with a high near 64 degrees. The chance of precipitation Wednesday is 90 percent. It should be mostly sunny Thursday with a 20 percent chance of rain.

2. Ocean Charter School in Del Rey is competing with Green Dot Charter School's Animo Westside for space at Walgrove Elementary School in Venice. Around 40 local parents attended a meeting Sunday to discuss the educational options. Details right here.

3. Two more Somali pirates were sentenced Monday to life in prison for the February high seas attack that left four Americans dead, including Del Rey Yacht Club members Jean and Scott Adam. Details right here.

4. The 10 kayakers from the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center will try to make their 26-mile voyage to Catalina Island this weekend after poor weather and a couple of colds kept them from embarking last weekend on their voyage. 5. St. Bernard High School in Playa del Rey has a football team that's been moving up in the polls. The Vikings (5-0) are ranked third in the latest CIF Southern Section Northwest Division Top 10 rankings. First-year coach Larry Muno and his squad have stated two consecutive second-half comeback rallies to climb in the poll. Details right here.
