Sunny Afternoons, Crime Stats and Your 9/11 Stories

The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies with highs in the low 70s this afternoon and Wednesday afternoon, too.

Today is Aug. 23. It is the 235th day of the year. We are under a waning crescent moon. Sunset will occur about 7:32 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for this afternoon calls for sunny skies with a high near 71 degrees with partly cloudy skies tonight and an overnight low around 64 degrees. Forecasters expect patchy fog Wednesday morning with a mostly sunny afternoon and a high near 72 degrees.

2. New statistics from the LAPD's Pacific Division, which includes Playa del Rey and Del Rey, shows a decline in burglaries and auto thefts in the July 17 to Aug. 13 reporting period compared to the June 19 to July 16 period. Details right here.

3. Two Somali pirates have been sentenced to life in prison for their roles in the February attack on the S/V Quest that led to the deaths of four Americans, including Jean and Scott Adam, members of the Del Rey Yacht Club in Marina del Rey. Details right here.
