Sunny Afternoons, Dockweiler Youth Center Growing Pains and Halloween Contest

Patch is holding a Halloween contest and we're looking for the most creative costume on a child aged 12 and under. The winner gets a trip for two to New York to meet celebrity judge Heidi Klum and a $1031 donation to a local charity of their choice.

Today is Oct. 27. It is the 300th day of the year. We are under a waxing crescent moon. Sunset will occur about 6:07 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for this afternoon calls for sunny skies with a high near 77 degrees with clear skies tonight and an overnight low around 53 degrees. Forecasters expect sunny skies Friday with a high near 79 degrees.

2. The Dockweiler Youth Center at Dockweiler State Beach in Playa del Rey is going through some growing pains. The 2-year-old youth center only had nine children participate in a week-long summer beach camp and some lifeguards have warned that the beach in front of the youth is dangerous. Details right here.

3. Patch is holding a Halloween contest looking for the most creative children's costume. Patch will whisk the winner to New York or Los Angeles for a three day, two night trip for two that includes a meet and greet with celebrity judge Heidi Klum, plus a donation of $1031 to a local charity of the winner's choice. Nine runners up will also get a $1031 donation from Patch to a local charity of their choice. The contest is for kids ages 12 and under. Details right here.
