Sunny Afternoons, Pet Microchipping and Petitioning Butler

The National Weather Service says we should expect sunny afternoons and high surf.

Today is Aug. 31. It is the 243rd day of the year. We are under a waxing crescent moon. Sunset will occur about 7:22 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for today calls for sunny skies with a high near 69 degrees with patchy  fog after 11 p.m. and an overnight low around 59 degrees. Forecasters expect patchy fog Thursday morning with sunshine in the afternoon and a high near 72 degrees.

Officials also have issued a high surf advisory in effect from 5 p.m. to day to 5 p.m. Friday for southwest-facing beaches. A powerful storm from the coast of New Zealand has produced a southwest swell that will have a period of around 20 seconds when it arrives later tonight with 7- to 9-feet breakers and maximum sets of 11 feet.

2. A Venice political organizer has started an online petition pledging support to state Assemblywoman Betsy Butler (D-Marina del Rey), if she runs against tea party candidate Nathan Mintz in the new 66th Assembly District down in the South Bay. Butler has indicated that she intends to run in the 50th District that includes Santa Monica and Malibu. Details right here.

3. A bill that would require microchipping for pets adopted from an animal shelter that was sponsored by state Sen. Ted Lieu, who represents Marina del Rey, is now on Gov. Jerry Brown's desk. Details right here.

4. It's the last week of summer for area students with school starting up again next week. Marina del Rey Patch is starting a new tradition of back-to-school photos, so get your cameras ready and plan on joining our photo gallery. Details right here.
