Sunny Skies, MLK Day and Lakers Host Thunder

Today is Jan. 17. It is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We are under a waxing gibbous moon. Sunset will occur at 5:11 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for today calls for sunny skies and a high of about 72 degrees with a clear night and an overnight low of around 57 degrees. It should be sunny Tuesday, too, with a high near 69 degrees.

2. Playa del Rey resident Phil Jackson and the Los Angeles Lakers lost the battle of the city Sunday as the Los Angeles Clippers beat them 99-92. The Lakers (30-12) host the Oklahoma City Thunder tonight at the Staples Center. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.

3. In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, government offices are closed. To see what's open and what's closed check here.
