Susie the Survivor Needs a Home

The 60-pound Mountain Dog mix was one of 60 dogs rescued by animal control from an illegal kennel.

Susie is a sweet, smart Mountain Dog mix, with a beautiful brown and white coat. Already spayed, up to date with shots, and housetrained, Susie is about 8 years old, and 60 pounds. She’s great with kids and other dogs, and she’s in need of a forever home.

Many people cannot forget the shocking news on CBS about the criminal, who kept dogs in stacked-up crates, operating as a boarding kennel. Animal control confiscated 60 dogs from him, and Susie was one of them.

Susie was originally a family dog with two kids and another dog. One day, the husband walked away, and then the wife suddenly died. The husband took the children, but not the dogs. An 82-year-old rescuer saved Susie and the family’s other dog, but she was misled and sent the dogs to the hoarder’s fake kennel. Sadly, by the time the dogs were confiscated by animal control, the other dog did not make it.

When Forte Animal Rescue (FAR) rescued Susie from animal control, she was quite emaciated, but started blossoming with care. Forte volunteers noticed some cysts on her skin. Taking her to an oncologist, 13 out of 14 of them were deemed mast cell tumors, but ultrasound showed none internally. Since Susie is such a good girl, she didn’t even need to be sedated when her liver and spleen were aspirated. The aspiration results came back negative, and the oncologist did not recommend surgery because it’s too invasive while the cells would likely come back. She’s now on medication, and her condition has plateaued, and hopefully it will stay that way.

After going through so much, Susie deserves happiness and joy with someone who will love her forever. Susie is so grateful for everything life offers to her. She is tame, sweet and cuddly, and enjoys long hikes with her foster dad and his other dog.

Forte Animal Rescue is a 100% volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, seeking solutions for pet overpopulation, as well as working together with the community to cultivate the human animal bond through educational programs and activities.  In addition to ongoing boarding and other expenses, Forte Animal Rescue continually incurs significant veterinary medical bills, hence any support would be greatly appreciated. Forte Animal Rescue is also looking for foster homes for its rescued dogs, along with volunteers to help its adoption events.
