Things to Do Memorial Day Weekend in Marina del Rey

If you're still trying to decide what to do this holiday weekend, here are a few suggestions for activities happening in Marina del Rey.

The Friends of Ballona Wetlands is sponsoring two events on Saturday. There will be a Ballona Dunes Restoration Party beginning at 9:30 a.m. During the event, participants will help restore the wetlands by removing non-native plant species and helping plant native ones.

"By doing that, we're creating a more healthy ecosystem," said Patrick Tyrrell, programs coordinator for the The Friends of Ballona Wetlands.

Since the area is closed to the public, it also offers the public "a chance to see the dunes which are quite lovely," Tyrrell said.

Advance reservations are not required, but those who participate are asked to dress comfortably and avoid wearing sandals or flip-flops. The meeting place will be behind Gordon's Market at 303 Culver Blvd. in Playa del Rey.

There will also be a Freshwater Marsh Interpretive Tour at 10 a.m. which will provide a view of a 25-acre marsh that has been fully restored, according to Tyrrell.

"It's a good example of a more intensive restoration process," he said.

Those participating are asked to meet at the intersection of Lincoln and Jefferson Boulevards. More information about both events, can be found by calling (310)306-5994, or by visiting the Friends of Ballona Wetlands online.

There will also be a "Make It and Take It" Crafts Class on Saturday at Dockweiler Beach. Designed for children up to 12 years old, kids will be able to make a craft project for free starting at 10 a.m. However, they must be accompanied by an adult and should meet on the concrete pad at the beach near the Dockweiler Youth Center.

To find out more details, call (310) 726-4128, or view the flyer online. No advance reservations are required.
