Top 5 Westside Stories: Decapitated Body, Broken Parking Meters, Christmas Run

Here are the top five Westside Patch stories from Dec. 2-8.

Close out your weekend with a recap of the newsiest and most popular Patch articles from last week. Here are the five stories that topped the headlines on Westside Patch sites:

  • A decapitated body found Tuesday outside a Culver City medical center was found to be the result of suicide. Culver City police and detectives closed nearby streets to traffic as they conducted the investigation. The man has been identified.
  • Join the conversation: Should you be fined for parking at a broken meter? The Los Angeles City Council voted 12-1 to override a state law that exempts drivers who park at broken meters from receiving parking tickets. Many Patch readers have weighed in with their thoughts. What do you think?
  • A Santa Monica violin coach charged in a molestation case involving two young girls has pleaded no contest. Julian Hallmark, formerly of Elemental Strings, signed a plea deal with prosecutors. His sentencing and probation hearing is scheduled for February.
  • A member of the U.S. Coast Guard who died in a confrontation with a panga boat was mourned by his former colleagues and local officials this week. Two men have been charged with killing an officer of the United States engaged in his official duties.
  • The 35th annual Santa Monica-Venice Christmas Run was held Saturday. Patch took photos of many of the runners who wore spirited holiday costumes for the 5K and 10K races. Did we see you there? Scroll through the photos here.

That's Juan "The Dollhouse." Have you seen him around? http://centurycity.patch.com/articles/must-see-la-marathon-photos#photo-9359639

Please tell me why when opening the Pacific Palisades Patch I should want to hear about a decapitated body in Culver City. Someone committed suicide and in the process his head was severed from his body. Does that merit significant notice to readers in this community? Was he from Pacific Palisades? Do his wife, parents or children live here? Was he driven to this sorrowful end by something or someone here? I don't think we need to hear only positive stories in this forum, fluff and so forth. But if you are going to run some story such as this, should there not be some reason it relates to readers in this community? And why this particular story and not some other? Recently there was a tragic death here when a motorcyclist was pinned beneath a bus on Sunset Blvd and killed. There is information still to be discerned; was he really traveling at excessive speed? Was the driver of the Big Blue Bus making his U-turn at Marquez against the light as many residents have seen drivers doing for years? In addition to the accident location being in the Palisades, the young man who was killed was a regular worker at a local restaurant and known by people in the community. Not pleasant reading. But most people I think would agree it was a story that needs to be covered in the local Patch. Teasing "A decapitated body" in headlines not to mention emails to subscribers? Please.

Hi SM in Palisades, thanks for your thoughtful comment. This story is a weekly round-up of the top viewed and commented stories published on a group of Westside Patches: Santa Monica, Culver City, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Venice-Mar Vista and Marina del Rey. While every story in the weekly round-up may not have a connection to all seven communities we cover, we believe our readers have an interest in the biggest stories that originate nearby in addition to the stories in their local Patch. They may be interested for many reasons: why streets were shut down in Culver City, perhaps they knew the man or worked with him, etc. Speaking of local stories, I'd like to direct you to Matt Sanderson's reporting on the fatal motorcycle vs. Big Blue Bus accident you mentioned in your comment: (original story here: http://patch.com/A-zJ8f, obituary here: http://patch.com/A-zSYD). Again, thank you for sharing your opinion. You are welcome to reach out to me at saraf@patch.com. Best, Sara Fay
