The Circuit: From Mother India to the Roof of the World. Photography by Hunter Joslin.

From the streets of India to Nepal and the roof of the world, this exhibition of LMU graduate student Hunter Joslin’s photography captures the beauty of local people and the colorful spirit of their mystical land.

His series Mother India was captured while participating in a six-week program with the International School for Jain Studies (ISJS). The program brought together religious, philosophical, and environmental scholars from around the world to study Jainism, an ancient religious tradition most known for its practice of ahimsa, or non-violence. The photography taken during the program in India portrays a friendly encounter with men, women, and children from the rural roads of Jalgaon to the busy and holy streets of Jaipur and Varanasi.

The subsequent series From The Roof of the World was captured while completing the fourteen-day Annapurna Circuit, a trek of 114 miles, summiting Thorung La pass at an elevation of 17,768 ft. The Circuit brought together trekkers from Egypt, Spain, England, Japan, Korea, France, Germany, and Argentina as they explored some of the more hidden regions of Nepal, encountering communities of Tibetan Buddhists, as well as indigenous Nepalese Hindus. The photography takes us circumnavigating Nepal’s vastly changing landscape, from the wet and humid green regions south of the Himalaya to the dry and barren snowcapped regions to the north.

Together, the two series collected by Hunter Joslin capture a unique world, where incense burns, laughing children beg for sweets, and foreign seekers find their way.
