Opinion: The Power of PTA Volunteers

Carol Kocivar is the president of the California Parent Teacher Association.

It’s that time of the year when I am reminded again of the power of PTA volunteers.

Our friends and neighbors, who squeeze precious time out of their busy schedules to help their schools, and by doing this help create strong communities and strong schools.

It is those folks who plan the annual holiday lunch for teachers and post information on the PTA website. They help with student field trips and assist in the classroom.

Thank you to all who volunteer.

Thank you to those who support our teachers, promote more parent engagement, and host a college night.

Thank you to everyone who organizes the fundraiser or serves as an officer and takes care of the day-to-day needs of their school’s PTA.

Thank you for providing the scholarship programs and awards for students and support for arts in our schools.

Thank you to the PTA volunteers who provide funding and support of books and library materials for students in juvenile probation camps.

Thank you to the PTAs that operate a low cost health, vision and medical clinics and referral programs, serving school children in Central and East Los Angeles, San Pedro, and the San Fernando Valley.

Thank you to those in Sacramento, who provide a Children’s Clothes Closet that assists students and their families with "gently-used" and new clothing items.

Here are some more ideas on how you can be involved and help our children and our schools:
