49ers Release Statement on Aldon Smith's Arrest: We're 'Disappointed'

The linebacker was arrested Sunday at LAX on suspicion of making a false report of a bomb threat.

The San Francisco 49ers today issued a brief statement on the arrest of linebacker Aldon Smith, who was taken into custody at Los Angeles International Airport after allegedly making a comment about having a bomb as he was undergoing security screening.

Smith, 24, was arrested about 2 p.m. Sunday in Terminal 1, and was booked at the Los Angeles Police Department's Pacific Station on suspicion of making a false report of a bomb threat, said Los Angeles Airport police Sgt. Karen Ortiz.

Smith was released Sunday night on $20,000 bail, according to the sheriff's department. No court date was set.

In a statement this morning, 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke said: "We are disappointed to learn of the incident involving Aldon Smith. As this is a pending legal matter and we are still gathering the pertinent facts, we will have no further comment."

Smith who resides in San Ramon, was approached by airport police in the gate area after he made the comment, and was arrested when he became uncooperative, Ortiz said.

According to media reports, Smith is already facing charges of possession of illegal assault weapons and a lawsuit filed by a man who says he was shot at a party at Smith's house. Both cases date back to 2012, when Smith was also arrested on suspicion of DUI in Miami.
