Boy Shot in Leg at Howard Hughes Center in Westchester

The victim "self-transported,'' to a hospital, police say.

A 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg at the Howard Hughes Center in Westchester, a police sergeant said Sunday.

A report came in to police dispatchers at 8:45 p.m. of “shots fired heard'' at the mall at 6081 Center Dr., Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Corbin Rhealt said.

“There was chaos, everyone running in different directions,'' Rhealt said.

Officers at the scene learned the boy had “self-transported,'' to a hospital with a gunshot wound to one leg, he said.

“No suspects are in custody and none were detained,'' Rhealt said.

“The mall was evacuated for a short time, then reopened when we determined there was not a suspect in the area,'' he said. The motive for the shooting was not known.

“There were clearly a lot of people there during the crime,'' Rhealt said. Police were asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact them at (877) ASKLAPD (275-5273.)
